Three Chiefs Fighting to Secure Their Roster Spots in Preseason Matchup vs Bucs

In this story:
The Kansas City Chiefs wrapped up training camp yesterday as they shift their focus toward the regular season. They still have two preseason matchups remaining before the campaign begins.
K.C. fell 20-12 to the Los Angeles Rams in the preseason opener, and while some players helped their roster chances, others remain on the bubble. These three will have plenty to prove in tomorrow's matchup against Tampa Bay.
3. CB Kaiir Elam
A failed first-round pick who signed with the Chiefs in April, Elam is competing for snaps at nickel alongside rookie Jadon Canady but has been outperformed by Chris Roland-Wallace.
Elam helped his case in the preseason opener, allowing just one catch, and could see more first-team reps if the coaching staff remains undecided about his roster spot.
There's still a chance Elam could benefit if another corner is traded before roster cuts at the end of the month. If not, though, his Chiefs tenure could end before he ever plays in a regular season game. It will likely come down to him and Kader Kohou for the final slot corner spot.
2. WR Andrew Armstrong
Armstrong has been one of the better stories of Chiefs training camp. The second-year undrafted free agent caught one pass in the preseason opener and has arguably been the team's best blocking wide receiver.

At 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, he brings more size than any other wideout on the roster. However, Armstrong remains a long shot to make the 53-man roster.
His biggest competition comes from Jalen Royals and Nikko Remigio. While Remigio may not offer much offensively, his special teams ability and familiarity with the Chiefs' system give him an advantage.
Armstrong has earned quarterback Patrick Mahomes' trust, but he may ultimately be viewed as a depth piece behing Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Cyrus Allen. Even if he finds his way onto the practice squad and is called up when injuries occur, he'll need to separate himself from the competition this week to secure a roster spot.
1. OT Ethan Driskell
Driscoll's discipline issues in the preseason opener seriously hurt his roster chances. Of the nine offensive line penalties K.C. committed last Saturday, Driscoll accounted for four of them.
Now, the third-year undrafted free agent finds his roster spot in serious jeopardy. The Chiefs signed Kellen Diesch yesterday, another offensive tackle, signaling that they're not very confident about their depth at the position.
Driscoll has appeared in just two games for Kansas City since joining the team in 2024 and is primarily viewed as a depth option. Last week's performance may have been the writing on the wall, but Driscoll will have a chance to redeem himself tomorrow.
