Last Sunday, the outlook of the entire Indianapolis Colts season changed when starting quarterback Daniel Jones went down with a non-contact Achilles injury in the first quarter against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Jones walked off the field under his own power, but just hours later, reports confirmed that he had torn his right Achilles tendon. The news meant he would be out for the season, and all of a sudden, the Colts had some massive shoes to fill.

Jones underwent surgery in New York earlier this week, but his recovery timetable is unclear. Just days after surgery, Jones shared his first message since the injury on social media.

"Thank you to my teammates, coaches, the Colts organization, and all the fans for the overwhelming support," Jones wrote on Instagram. "Tough way to end this season but it has been an honor to wear the horseshoe and play for Colts fans. I’ll miss lining up with my guys, but I’ll be riding with them every step of the way. Go Colts!"

Colts players present & past show love to Jones

The post has garnered attention from Colts fans and players alike as they share their thanks to Jones for an unforgettable season.

"WE APPRECIATE AND LOVE YOU BROTHER.. 🗣🗣 THANK YOU," Pat McAfee commented.

"We got you," Michael Pittman Jr. said.

"Love bro 🙏💙," Alec Pierce wrote.

"Indiana Dimes 🖤," Zaire Franklin commented.

"Indiana [Jones] gave it everything!! All love brother!!" Spencer Shrader said.

What are the Colts' next steps?

Jones signed a one-year deal with the Colts back in March and competed with Anthony Richardson Sr. for the starting job in Shane Steichen's offense. Steichen announced in the summer that Jones had won the job, and he proved he earned it by leading the Colts to a historic start to the 2025 season.

Jones commandeered the Colts to an 8-2 record through 10 weeks, which stood as the best mark in the NFL. After a Week 11 bye, the Colts lost their next three games while Jones battled a fractured left fibula.

With his contract set to expire after the season, it's unclear whether the Colts will bring him back for the long term. A torn Achilles could mean a long recovery, so Jones may not even be ready by Week 1 of next season.

The Colts reportedly had interest in bringing him back before the injuries, but things have undoubtedly gotten more difficult since then. If I had to guess, I could see the Colts signing Jones to another one-year deal IF they think he'll be ready to go by next September.

If Jones isn't under center, the Colts have Richardson under contract for one more year. This injury could give Richardson yet another opportunity to prove he can be the starter in Steichen's system as the former fourth-overall pick continues to nurse an orbital fracture.

Jones has a long road to recovery ahead of him, but as someone who has already dealt with a torn ACL before, this shouldn't be anything new to the veteran gunslinger.
