Four Commanders Ranked Among All-Time Super Bowl QBs
The argument of "greatest of all time" NFL quarterbacks begins and ends with Tom Brady's supreme reign. However, the league boasts many other crazy talented quarterbacks that have shined on the biggest football stage: the Super Bowl.
NFL.com ranked the best 66 quarterbacks to ever start a Super Bowl and four Washington Commanders landed on the list. Joe Theismann is the highest-ranked Washington quarterback at No. 36, followed by No. 46 Billy Kilmer, No. 48 Mark Rypien and No. 56 Doug Williams.
Theismann helped Washington to consecutive Super Bowl appearances; winning Super Bowl XVII over the Miami Dolphins for Washington's first championship in 40 years. Theirsmann set several franchise records, including most career passing attempts, most career passing completions and most career passing yards. NFL.com ranked Theismann in the "crazy talented for a tier this low" category.
"Cam (Newton) and Theismann have MVP seasons and a few Pro Bowls to their names, NFL.com writes. "but they both had some erratic play to go with their big arms and big personalities."
Kilmer and Rypien are ranked in the "middle of the pack" category. In 1971, Kilmer led Washington to their first postseason victories in 27 years and a Super Bowl appearance. Rypien is first Canadian-born quarterback to both start in the NFL and be named Super Bowl MVP, leading Washington to a Super Bowl XXVI win.
Williams is first Black quarterback to both start and win a Super Bowl. He was named Super Bowl MVP after leading Washington to a Super Bowl XXII victory over the Denver Broncos.
After an unprecedented career, the recently-retired Brady takes the top spot on the list. Behind Brady is No. 2 Johnny Unitas, No. 3 Joe Montana, No. 4 Peyton Manning and No. 5 Dan Marino. The ranking is based on accomplishment as it stands today.
Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts, the two quarterbacks in starting Super Bowl LVII, also make the list. Mahomes is at No. 10 and climbing while Hurts, who has only 34 career regular-season starts, lands at No. 57. It's not often Mahomes is an underdog ... He and the Kansas City Chiefs will try to pull the upset over the Philadelphia Eagles (1.5-point favorites) in Glendale, Ariz. on Feb. 12 to become Super Bowl LVII Champions.
