Cowboys Luke Schoonmaker: How 'Fast' & How 'Polished'? Coach Brian Schottenheimer Scouts Rookie

The Cowboys added a tight end to their room in Michigan's Luke Schoonmaker, with new offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer loving everything about the former Wolverine.

Before the NFL Draft, many were expecting the Dallas Cowboys to take a tight end, and they did...just not the one everyone thought.

Michigan's Luke Schoonmaker got the call and is now the newest member of a tight end room comprising Jake Ferguson, Peyton Hendershot, and Sean McKeon.

And...

New offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is looking forward to having Schoonmaker at his disposal.

"Really excited we got Luke," Schottenheimer said. "I think when you look at him, he's a guy we felt could do everything. He can control the C gap in the run game, he's been well coached, he's real polished in the run game, but you don't realize how fast the guy is. He's a legit 4.58 guy."

That kind of speed will help Schoonmaker stretch the defense down the seams, and we know Dak Prescott loves to spread the ball around to his offensive playmakers.

With Dalton Schultz now a Houston Texan, Schoonmaker is likely to step in and be a viable contributor to Mike McCarthy's new offense.

But...

Is Schottenheimer happy with his current crop of tight ends that collectively has 36 receptions for 288 yards and five touchdowns?

"I feel really good about the entire tight end room, it's a really good, young tight end room," Schottenheimer said. "They've played a lot of football last year, which is great, and I think Luke [Schoonmaker] fits right into the mix with it."

With Schoonmaker a willing blocker as the Cowboys look to become more of a rushing force next season, coupled with his ability to get vertical, Dallas has another weapon to utilize.

It is a young tight end room for the Cowboys, but it is one that Schottenheimer is eager to get to work with.
