Jaishawn Barham Flashed Elite Potential In Cowboys Debut & Numbers Back It Up

The Jaishawn Barham hype train is running full steam ahead, and the Dallas Cowboys appear to have a future star on their hands.

Every year, we are warned not to overreact to the NFL preseason. Every year, we ignore that advice and fall into the same traps. For the Dallas Cowboys faithful, it usually involves falling in love with a training camp or preseason standout, and this year is no different.

When the Cowboys arrived in Oxnard for the start of training camp, there was immediately one name that continued to pop up: third-round pick Jaishawn Barham.

Barham wasted no time impressing the coaching staff, fans, and the team's beat writers, with rave reviews coming out every day for the former Michigan Wolverines star linebacker. Unfortunately, his momentum was slowed because of a minor groin injury that kept him out of practice.

This past week, Barham returned to practice, and on Saturday he made his preseason debut. He instantly lived up to the hype when he strapped on the pads, and he put on one heck of a show.

Barham was so impressive at the start of training camp that he was given the opportunity to wear the green dot and call plays on defense in his debut. He did not disappoint.

He finished the game with five tackles, three run stops, and one tackle for a loss. Most importantly, Barham was Dallas' highest-graded defender by PFF, recording an 89.9 grade in 22 snaps. In fact, he was the team's highest-graded player overall.

For the analytics lovers, Adam Carter on X put the numbers into perspective and highlighted just how elite Barham has been throughout his career.

Barham is just one of three FBS EDGE/Linebacker prospects in the past decade to post a pressure rate of greater than 25 percent, a win rate in true pass sets of greater than 27.5 percent, and a run stop rate of greater than 10 percent. The other two players to hit those marks? Micah Parsons and Abdul Carter.

Now, before everyone gets too excited, it is just one game, but the Cowboys fan base hasn't had much to be excited about on the defensive side of the ball in recent years, especially at the linebacker position.

Hopefully, Barham can continue to develop into a defensive stud, and prove to be the mid-round diamond in the rough that the franchise has been waiting for.
