Eagles Camp Day 12: Energy, Scuffles & WWE at Browns Joint Practice

The Philadelphia Eagles dominated the back end of two joint practices with the Cleveland Browns.

PHILADELPHIA - A lackluster Monday joint practice with Cleveland was answered emphatically by the Philadelphia Eagles a day later with the words energy and juice being the theme.

In a practice that was moved up from 5 p.m. ET to 1:45 p.m. ET in order to beat expected thunderstorms, the Eagles put their collective feet down on a Browns team that seemed content with a solid Day 1 performance fueled by a dominating effort by All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett.

“What did you see?” Eagles slot cornerback Avonte Maddox rhetorically asked a reporter who asked about the palpable energy of Philadelphia. “I definitely feel like we picked it up today.”

Veteran Cleveland defensive end Ogbonnia Okoronkwo even went up to Eagles All-Pro center Jason Kelce after practice to acknowledge the beatdown as the two wished each other luck for the season ahead.

Here are the observations for the day:

-Before practice, the big news was Philadelphia adding star edge rusher Haason Reddick to their injury list with a thumb issue.

The All-Pro edge rusher is going to miss significant time for the rest of the summer as the Eagles play it cautious but the team does not expect Reddick to miss any regular season action.

Left guard Landon Dickerson (foot) was injured in Monday's practice and sat out the session with Sua Opeta taking over at left guard and Josh Sills also mixing in. Receivers Quez Watkins (hamstring) and Britain Covey (hamstring) remained sidelined, as did edge rusher Patrick Johnson.

Kelce got kicked on Philadelphia's final offensive rep of Day 1 and was limping but recovered and was a full participant on Tuesday.

-As for the depth chart, rookie safety Sydney Brown is getting more first-team reps next to Reed Blankenship, along with veterans Terrell Edmunds and K'Von Wallace. Nakobe Dean and Nicholas Morrow were the linebackers with Christian Ellis and Zach Cunningham also getting first-team work.

The latter tipped a ball that Blankenship intercepted for the second consecutive day. Cunningham isn't the fastest linebacker but he's very long and has a knack for getting in the passing lanes.

Veteran Brandon Graham started on the edge for Reddick and both Georgia rookies Nolan Smith and Jalen Carter, also got work there. That's notable for Carter, an interior player who got some outside reps for the second straight day, and he's been turning it up recently by showing off his elite traits. The No. 9 overall pick put All-Pro guard Joel Bitonio on the turf at one point with a brilliant rush.

-We had scuffles today in what was oppressive humidity. The biggest one came when Cunningham deflected a Deshaun Watson pass that resulted in the first of two interceptions by Blankenship.

With Blankenship returning the pick, Brown used his missile-like defensive approach to block the Browns' Demetric Felton Jr. and plenty of Cleveland players took exception with massive rookie offensive tackle Dawand Jones being the most notable. Moments later, Eagles defensive end Derek Barnett threw actual punches at Browns tight end Thomas Greaney.

-Sean Desai continues to try everything on the back end it seems. One thing we've seen against the Browns is James Bradberry working inside as a big slot cornerback and Zech McPhearson moving back outside as an occasional curveball look.

-On this field, this has been the summer of Blankenship, who picked off Watson three times in two practices. His second on Tuesday was in red-zone work when he had the back of the end zone locked down with Watson trying to force the ball to tight end Jordan Akins.

Barnett had a nice rush of the latter pick to hurry Watson but Blankenship was one of the best players on the field in practices loaded with stars on both sides.

-Offensively receiver Tyrie Cleveland continues to distance himself from the other down-roster players at the position. The rangy Cleveland hauled in a fade pass from Marcus Mariota with Lorenzo Burns in coverage which caused the Eagles' sideline to explode.

Cleveland then came right back to convert the ensuing two-point conversion with a quick out from Mariota.

-Josh Jobe, who continues to be the third outside cornerback behind Bradberry and Darius Slay, had a nice interception of his own snaring the football in front of Cedric Tillman in the end zone of the final competitive period of the two sessions.

-Eagles receiver A.J. Brown was too much for Martin Emerson in the competitive period, drawing a pass interference penalty and then raising up over the cornerback for a touchdown.

-Philadelphia continues to use Kenny Gainwell as its top running back in high-leverage situations.

-Former Arizona GM Steve Keim was at practice as a guest of the Eagles as were WWE stars Grayson Waller and Johnny Gargano. WWE's biggest show of the year -- Wrestlemania 40 -- will be at Lincoln Financial Field in April of 2024.
