A Beast And A Film Star, Why Willie Lampkin Is Making Case For Eagles Roster Spot

The undrafted free agent, signed last year by the Rams and later claimed by the Eagles, is having a solid training camp, though he left practice early on Day 9 with an undisclosed injury

PHILADELPHIA – Willie Lampkin turned the Eagles' training camp upside down and gave it a shake during Day 8 of training camp on Saturday, holding his ground and stonewalling pass rushers Zion Wilson and Gabe Hall during one-on-one drills.

The undrafted free agent interior offensive lineman has been opening eyes throughout camp. So much so that the Eagles PR staff decided to make him available to talk with the media after Monday's practice. Except Lampkin left practice early with an undisclosed illness. That took him off the interview list.

It’s not easy to make an NFL team when you’re considered short, and Lampkin is listed at 5-11. He may be more like 5-10. It takes persistence and belief in yourself to make it happen. Lampkin is a wide-body, though, with a lot of power and strength packed into his 290-pound frame.

“Willie's a beast,” said teammate and fellow interior lineman Drew Kendall. “Willie's great. He's fun to work with, too. Like, he's a great guy, brings a lot of energy. So, he's been fun, you know. It's been fun to kind of do that with him together. But I think he's having a great camp.”

So do his coaches, including the top dawg himself, Nick Sirianni.

“You notice him even more once the pads have come on," said the coach. “He can play on the inside at center or guard; good versatility, smart guy, really athletic. He's been fun to watch at camp.”

So much so, that Sirianni said he and his coaches love watching his practice film.

“We find ourselves as coaches when we're watching tape, just kind of being like, 'Man, Willie did it again,’” he said. “Willie's getting some really good guys to go up against. That's tested every day, and we're just looking for him to continue to grow and continue to show what he can do because it's about consistency. We all want consistency, to have that steady growth of getting better, but you're building trust.

“I think Willie is building trust with his teammates because you build trust by consistently doing what you're supposed to do out there, and Willie's been doing that. I know not only the coaches, but we're all impressed by Willie.”

Impressed enough to win a job? The Rams cut him at the end of camp last year with an injury, after signing the first-team All-American out of the University of North Carolina. The word was L.A. wanted to get him back to the practice squad, but the Eagles swooped in to claim him.

Lampkin is likely battling to be the second interior option behind Kendall. Jake Majors, who is 6-3, has had a solid camp and is in that battle, too, as are rookie sixth-round pick Micah Morris and maybe even seven-year veteran Michael Jordan.

Either way, Lampkin will have to put whatever injury he suffered on Monday behind him and do it quickly if he wants to give himself a chance.
