Earlier this month, The 32-year-old Patterson offered a brief four-word message on X, formally known as Twitter, seemingly announcing his departure.

"ATL it's been real," Patterson tweeted.

Patterson's partner, Taylor Quick, responded with a heartfelt message further implying the 6-2, 220-pound running back's exit.

"What an incredible era," Quick tweeted. "You played your heart out per usual. Thank you Atlanta for cheering on my man! History was made!"

Patterson's two-year contract, which was signed in March of 2022, officially expired three weeks ago.

Atlanta's re-signed five of its own free agents, including long snapper Liam McCullough, center Ryan Neuzil, linebacker Nate Landman, receiver KhaDarel Hodge and offensive tackle Storm Norton.

But Patterson evidently didn't fit into the plans of new head coach Raheem Morris, offensive coordinator Zac Robinson and the rest of Atlanta's staff.

Patterson enjoyed a career revitalization during his first year with the Falcons in 2021, becoming the second player in franchise history to eclipse both 500 rushing and receiving yards in the same season, joining Devonta Freeman in 2015.

He followed suit with a strong 2022 campaign, rushing for 695 yards and eight touchdowns on 144 carries across 13 games and 11 starts.

But 2023 didn't go according to plan for Patterson, who took a backseat to rookie Bijan Robinson and second-year pro Tyler Allgeier. Patterson finished the year with 50 carries for 181 yards to go along with nine receptions for 38 yards and a score.

His best game came in Week 7 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, taking 10 carries for 56 yards while Robinson was limited to just one carry due to a headache.

Patterson finished his three-year stint in Atlanta with 1,494 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground with 82 catches for 708 yards and six scores through the air.

He also stamped his name in the history books in Week 11, 2022, with a kick return touchdown against the Chicago Bears. It was the ninth of his career, setting an NFL record.

History was made, records were broken and memories were made - but now, Patterson is turning the page on his Falcons chapter.
