The Atlanta Falcons are kicking off their preseason slate tonight against the Miami Dolphins, but a key player won't suit up.

According to NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe, projected starting quarterback Desmond Ridder won't suit up for the Falcons this week. Neither will Dolphins starter Tua Tagovailoa.

It's a strange decision to not give Ridder preseason reps considering the fact that he only has four NFL regular season appearances to his name. However, the Falcons sitting him likely means the team is confident in having him as the starting quarterback going into the season.

As a rookie, Ridder started the team's final four games, and after beginning his career 0-2, he finished the season on a two-game win streak and nearly won the NFC South Division title as Atlanta’s starter. Now he’ll be expected to continue building on his late-season success from Week 1 in 2023.

With Ridder sitting out of the preseason opener, the Falcons quarterback reps will go to Taylor Heinicke and Logan Woodside. Heinicke signed with the Falcons this offseason after three seasons with the Washington Commanders. Woodside signed with the team in December after playing with the Tennessee Titans and is fighting for one of the final roster spots.

The Falcons and Dolphins kick off at 7 p.m. at Hard Rock Stadium.
