Giants Elevate Tommy DeVito from Practice Squad Ahead of Week 7 Game

DeVito's elevation doesn't bode well for Daniel Jones's chances of playing against the Commanders.

The New York Giants have elevated quarterback Tommy DeVito from their practice squad to serve as insurance during Sunday's Week 7 game against the Washington Commanders.

Starting quarterback Daniel Jones has been dealing with a neck injury suffered in a Week 5 loss to the Miami Dolphins. He missed last week's game against the Bills after not being cleared to practice.

Jones later told NBC reporter Melissa Stark that his neck injury, which is not the same kind as what kept him out of the final six games of the 2021 season, was a different sort of injury in which he felt pain on the left side of his neck that radiated down his arm.

This week, Jones was cleared to do some individual drills in practice, but he is not believed to have participated in any team drills, those reps going to quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

Head coach Brian Daboll told reporters before Friday's practice that Jones had yet to be cleared for contact but that they remained hopeful that clearance would come before Sunday's game. As such, the Giant listed Jones as questionable for the game.

However, an ESPN report by Jeremy Fowler said that Jones's chances of being cleared to play against the Commanders on Sunday were "not great," hence the move to elevate DeVito.

The Giants worked out a pair of quarterbacks, Matt Barkley and Ian Book, earlier this week to likely identify who they will put on speed dial if Jones is placed on injured reserve. Daboll has said that he doesn't believe Jones's injury is season-ending, but the team wants to be cautious with its franchise quarterback's neck.

The Giants also elevated offensive lineman Jalen Mayfield from the practice squad to provide depth on the short-staffed and injury-plagued Giants offensive line.
