Chiefs' Guard Trey Smith Says Urban Meyer, Jaguars Wanted to Sign Him as an UDFA

The Chiefs' right guard has been incredibly important toward Kansas City's success ... but he was this close to being a Jaguar.

Leading up to the 2021 NFL Draft, few prospects had as many fans as former Tennessee guard Trey Smith.

Smith dominated on tape throughout college and had all the makings of a long-term starter at guard. But the former two-time First-Team All-SEC selection's history of blood clots at Tennesee led to him slipping through the cracks of the draft, eventually being taken with the third-to-last pick of the sixth round with the No. 226 selection.

As Smith tells it, though, there is a chance he could have been a Jacksonville Jaguar had the Chiefs not stepped in at the final hour.

“I get a call. Ring, ring, it’s Urban Meyer from the Jaguars,” Smith said on the Trey Wallace Podcast. “He’s like ‘Okay, we’re going to take you as an undrafted free agent guy. We’re going to fly you and your dad in tomorrow.

“That was really cool because I had a really good relationship with him when he was at Ohio State. So I was thinking in mind, ‘Boom, free agent, I’m going to Jacksonville.’ It is what it is. Can’t cry, can’t complain.”

Smith, obviously, wouldn't last to undrafted free agency. Instead, he ended up with the Chiefs and the rest is history. He has started the last two seasons at right guard, including starting in the Chiefs' Super Bowl LVII win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Jaguars, meanwhile, rolled with A.J. Cann and Ben Bartch as starters at right guard before signing Brandon Scherff last March to a three-year, $49.5 million deal.

Jacksonville, meanwhile, only have themselves to blame for not nabbing Smith considering they selected Georgia Tech wide receiver Jalen Camp over him with their final selection at No. 206 overall. Camp went on to be cut after training camp and has spent the last two years with the Houston Texans, never even spending a day on the Jaguars' practice squad.
