Tony Boselli’s New NFL Appointment Could Be a Big Win for the Jaguars

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jacksonville Jaguars Executive Vice President of Football Operations Tony Boselli has an important new role.

The Jaguars' legend was named to the NFL Competition Committee on Monday afternoon, landing the Hall of Famer an important appointment within the NFL.

"I have always viewed the game of football – and the institutions and traditions that support it – as sacred," Boselli said in a statement. "I felt that way when I entered the National Football League as a player more than 30 years ago, and I feel an even greater responsibility to it today.

"It is an honor to serve on the Competition Committee and to represent the best interests of the game, the NFL, and all 32 clubs. I look forward to joining the other members of the committee and continuing their good work as we thoroughly study the game, protect its integrity, and continue to evolve and grow it for future generations of players and fans."

Boselli's appointment to the committee is a big honor, with former commissioner Pete Rozelle created the competition committee in 1968. But why could this honor also equate to good news for the Jaguars at large?

Boselli's Appointment

Simply put, Boselli will now be one of the voices on the most important NFL committee today. The competition committee "reviews all competitive aspects of the game, including (but not limited to) playing rules, roster regulations, technology, game-day operations and player protection," and is overseen by co-chairmen Stephen Jones and Rich McKay.

Other members of the committee include Katie Blackburn (Cincinnati Bengals), Todd Bowles (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), John Lynch (San Francisco 49ers), John Mara (New York Giants), Sean McVay (Los Angeles Rams), Kevin O'Connell (Minnesota Vikings), Sean Payton (Denver Broncos), DeMeco Ryans (Houston Texans), and Mike Vrabel (New England Patriots). This is a short list of the NFL's who's who, with only a few key names missing.

By virtue of Boselli rubbing shoulders with so many top head coaches and executives around the league, this offers the Jaguars yet another chance to expand their relationships and influence around the NFL. Having a voice with keen understanding of the questions facing the franchise on the committee is undoubtedly a good thing for Jacksonville, but the relationships with the rest of the committee might be the biggest draw.

Jaguars head coach Liam Coen noted during the offseason that the Jaguars wanted more joint practices in 2025, for example, but it didn't happen due to the newness the Jaguars' fresh regime offered.

"Last year we were in a first-year spot, so we didn't get a ton of juice and help on that front, so we ended up having one joint practice against Miami and that was it in [Preseason] Week 3," Coen said in March.

This time around, the Jaguars have scheduled four joint practices across three weeks with all three opponents, which has directly impacted how they have deployed players in the preseason. The extra juice and influence from the franchise paid off, and that is just one example of how Boselli's new role could help the Jaguars. Whenever the Jaguars need to connect with several of the NFL's top franchises, they now have an easy in.
