Lions Not Awarded 2023 Compensatory Draft Picks

In this story:
The Detroit Lions will not receive any compensatory draft picks. The NFL awarded the selections on Thursday, six days before the official start of free agency.
The NFL attempts to keep the playing field level, and awards compensatory picks based on free agents signed and lost.
If a team loses more players in free agency than are signed, the organization will be rewarded with additional draft selections.
For the Lions, general manager Brad Holmes and the front office made the decision last offseason to retain a significant amount of their own free agents.
Only a handful of players were signed from other teams, including Mike Hughes and DJ Chark Jr.
One player the team lost in free agency was Jalen Reeves-Maybin, thus resulting in a positive gain on the roster.
It is expected the team will take a similar approach this offseason, although more players could depart. The team has a significant amount of draft capital.
"We made a commitment to build this thing the right way, and sometimes the right way is the hard way," Holmes said, following the conclusion of the 2022 season. "But, it’s still, it’s just the right way, and we stayed committed to it. And, we saw the growth, and we just stayed patient. And like I said, we just had a disciplined approach and I think towards the end, you started to see it really materialize. So, it’s good to see.”
