GREEN BAY, Wis. – The first sentence from Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur’s postgame news conference said it all.

“Well, it certainly feels good to be on the other side of one of these tight ballgames,” he said after a 23-20 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Green Bay had been 1-4 in one-score games. Since rallying past the Saints at Lambeau in Week 3, the Packers had lost games by four points at the Raiders, two points at the Broncos and four points at the Steelers.

This time, the Packers made the highlight plays.

And got some good fortune.

On the second play of the game-winning drive, Jordan Love was stripped by Khalil Mack. Right tackle Zach Tom saved the day by recovering the fumble.

Given new life, Love drove the Packers to the go-ahead touchdown, with Romeo Doubs making a big-time catch in the end zone. After an exchange of punts, Chargers rookie receiver Quentin Johnston dropped what might have been a game-winning 70-yard touchdown. Kenny Clark’s fourth-down deflection sealed the deal.

“It was huge at the end of the game. Our defense, I would say, bailed me out for the conservative calls at the end of the game,” LaFleur said. “I’m just really proud of our group. I thought our guys, they battled, they competed. I’m really proud of Jordan and just the poise that he showed, the leadership he showed. He made some big-time plays.”

Love threw for 322 yards. Not only was it his first 300-yard game, it was the team’s first 300-yard passing game since Aaron Rodgers threw for 341 yards against Chicago on Dec. 12, 2021.

“I think for me personally, that’s always in the back of my head, just the past experiences that we’ve had, being in this situation and not capitalizing,” Love said. “Our message was just, ‘Go finish. Go compete. And go be great.’”

Ten players caught at least one pass. Only Miami’s Tyreek Hill (nine) and Denver’s Courtland Sutton (eight) have more touchdown catches than Doubs (seven). The Packers had a season-high eight “explosive” plays in the passing game; an explosive pass gains at least 16 yards. 

All three of Dontayvion Wicks’ catches gained at least 25 yards. According to the Packers, he became the first Packers rookie in 45 years with three-plus 25-yard catches in a game.

It was Green Bay’s 10th consecutive home win over an AFC West team.
