In this story:

The NFL Draft is less than three weeks away, and with the draft always comes trades, some blockbusters that involve players that are already stars in the league, and some where draft compensation is traded to move up or down the board.

Each team has a dream scenario for how draft night goes, and that scenario probably looks very different from the rest of the league. For the Carolina Panthers, one insider has the perfect scenario for Carolina to nail draft night as they have in free agency.

Panthers Trade Up for Defense in Dream Scenario

Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine released his “Every NFL Team’s Dream Scenario in Round 1” article on Friday. Ballentine has the Panthers trading up from 19 to target an edge rusher. Edge rusher has been a huge point of emphasis for the Panthers this offseason, and obviously, it was addressed with the Jaelan Phillips signing from the first week of free agency.

This draft class is also a great class to be aggressive for edge rushers, there’s probably going to be more than 10 selected before round three If the Panthers are trading up, though, it means they see someone they love, who they know won’t get to 19, and there’s one name that makes all the sense in the world for Carolina.

Rueben Bain Jr is Who Carolina Would Trade Up For

Obviously, what people think about when bringing up Rueben Bain Jr is how short his arms are, and that’s a rightful concern as short arms haven’t boded well for edge rushers in the past, but the Bain was still so dominant at Miami that it feels inevitable he’ll be a top 10 pick in the draft.

Bain is also a Miami Hurricane, just like Panthers GM Dan Morgan is, so it wouldn’t surprise anyone if Morgan targeted a violent edge rusher, who has great bend and speed, who just also happens to be a Hurricane alum.

Panthers Target Elite Wide Receiver Talent After Landing an EDGE

The other layer of Ballentine’s dream scenario for the Carolina Panthers was landing a stud wide receiver; this, of course, would mean the Panthers would have two picks in the first round. The receiver that was named is USC’s Makai Lemon, who is undoubtedly one of the best receiver talents in this class.

Lemon was the engine of the Trojans’ pass game, recording 79 catches, 1156 yards, and 11 touchdowns on the season. Lemon would immediately become the wide receiver two for Carolina, even over Jalen Coker, who ascended at the end of the 2025 season for Carolina.

Lemon primarily operates in the slot, but can move around each receiver spot on the field. Lemon has phenomenal ball skills and can make contested catches look easy.

Why Carolina Should Make This Happen

The Panthers clearly think they have a window to win, and that window is right now. They’ve added a ton of pieces through free agency, and if they stay as aggressive in the draft as they were with free agency, then they’ll land two key pieces for each side of the ball.

It may not end up being the exact two players used as examples, but if the Panthers can land another edge rusher and a young, talented pass catcher for Bryce Young, Carolina can solidify themselves as the favorites in the NFC South.
