Is Raiders RT Job Munford's to Lose?

The Las Vegas Raiders could roll with Thayer Munford Jr. at right tackle for the 2024 season.

The Las Vegas Raiders’ offensive line has been impressive in the last two seasons.

However, they will enter the 2024 season with a new group of players on the line, specifically the right side.

The Raiders let right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor go to the New York Giants in free agency and have not re-signed right guard Greg Van Roten, who played over 1,000 snaps in 2023, according to Pro Football Focus.

Las Vegas will now look for replacements on the right side of the line. One replacement, however, could already be in-house at right tackle.

Thayer Munford Jr. played 521 snaps at left and right tackle for the Raiders in 2023. He played 336 of those snaps after Antonio Pierce took over as interim head coach midway through the season. Pierce showed confidence in Munford to play more snaps under his tutelage.

The Raiders have a new offensive line coach in James Cregg and a new offensive coordinator in Luke Getsy, so a new offensive staff allows Munford to have a fair shot at earning the starting right tackle spot.

Getsy’s arrival could benefit Munford. He thrived as a run blocker last season, and Getsy loves to run the football. The Chicago Bears were at the top of the league in rushing attempts in Getsy’s two seasons there. Munford has an offensive coordinator who will play him to his strengths.

When Munford filled in on the line last season, he played well. He earned a 74.1 PFF grade and an 80.4 grade for run blocking. He also committed just one penalty. The former seventh-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Ohio State has earned the chance to compete for the starting job.

Munford’s flexibility also gives him a better shot to be a starter next season. He has the body type to play guard, so if the Raiders need him to fill in at that spot, he can. He likely profiles best at right tackle, though.

The Raiders could invest premium draft capital in a right tackle in the 2024 NFL Draft, as there are several talented ones in this class. If they don’t, Munford should go into the 2024 season with a real shot at being named the starter.

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently have the No. 13 overall pick.
