Drew Brees WON'T Be League MVP — and Here's Why Saints Fans Should Be Happy About It

The year 1999. It was a year much more famous than for only just the impeachment of then-President Bill Clinton, the debut of a white rap music star from suburban Detroit named Eminem, or a hit movie called 'The Matrix". It just also happens to be the very last time in NFL history — nearly 20 years ago — that a League MVP won the Super Bowl in the very same season.

That player is now-retired and NFL Hall-of-Fame QB Kurt Warner, when he played for the St. Louis (before they moved back to Los Angeles) Rams, who beat the Tennessee Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV (34).

So it goes without saying: League MVP's historically don't get to the Super Bowl very often; and even when they do manage to make it, they end up losing the most important game (the World Championship of Pro Football, better known by the more popular term "Super Bowl") of them all.

Which is the whole reason why a large portion of Saints fans night need to calm down and stop worrying about the recognition and praise that's currently being showered upon 22-year old superstar and 2nd year Kansas City Chiefs QB sensation Patrick Mahomes, who presumably has now taken the lead over Saints QB Drew Brees in the race for the NFL 2018 Most Valuable Player award.

Many Saints fans are more than just a little upset to see Mahomes take that lead away from Brees.

But should they actually be HAPPY about it, instead?

While that might sound crazy to some Who Dats, allow yourselves to remove your Black and Gold-colored sunglasses just long enough to consider these facts.

The League MVP award hasn’t exactly amounted to much success for past winners in the Super Bowl dating back nearly two decades. The most recent example — 2017 MVP Tom Brady (a previous Super Bowl winner when he WASN'T that particular year's MVP) — is a testament to that very fact.

But from Matt Ryan to Cam Newton; and from Peyton Manning (twice) to Brady (twice), League MVP's have undergone a losing streak in the Super Bowl within the past 20 years that appears to have no end in sight, at least anytime in the near future.

However: it gets even WORSE if you;re the League MVP playing the quarterback position in the Super Bowl.

In the 52 Super Bowls that have been played since the year 1967, only a grand total of 6 — count'em: SIX — quarterbacks have won the Lombardi Trophy.

And no: that's not a misprint.

As a matter of fact: quarterbacks that have won the League MVP award and then played in the Super Bowl have lost the last EIGHT TIMES since Warner won the last one.

And of course: Saints fans certainly can recall one of those times.

It goes without saying that at this point, there's just seemingly no way that Brees will come back to overtake the lead from Mahomes, barring a complete collapse by the exciting young signal-caller.

The National Media has "fallen in love" with Mahomes and rightfully so, as the sensational young gunslinger has drawn many comparisons to a 'younger version' of former Green Bay Packers QB Hall of Fame living legend Brett Favre.

Nevertheless, Brees isn't likely to go down without a fight.

Heading into tomorrow night (after 13 games), Brees has thrown for 31 touchdown passes and only four interceptions; and is completing 75.7 percent of his passes.

And as a matter of fact: Brees is arguably having the best season of his career at nearly 40 years old (his birthday is next month on January 15th).

Unfortunately for him (and for Saints fans wanting him to be chosen as the League MVP), he’s experienced below average / sub-par outings in back-to-back weeks; that have included two really bad interceptions.

And while two interceptions in two straight weeks shouldn't disqualify Brees from still winning the award, it's still allowed Mahomes to take over the lead in the MVP race since that time.

The Tyler, Texas native has now thrown for a League-high 4,543 yards passing and a league-leading 45 touchdown passes through 14 games.

Those are numbers that far exceed what Brees has done, and more importantly from his (and Chiefs fans) perspective(s), it will very likely be more than enough to "sway" the assorted members of the sports media covering the NFL that will ultimately vote for the award itself.

Make no mistake about it: no one is attempting to diminish the accomplishments of Brees or the (11-2) Saints this season; and there's honestly no way that anyone could even if they tried.

But the voters will be convinced to cast their ballots for the more exciting and "flashier" star — and right now: that's Mahomes and not Brees.

But if you consider yourself an actual Saints fan?

Then chances are you realize exactly what Brees and the Saints themselves realize:

Which simply is that there is only one real awardthat EVERY NFL player truly desires above all else: the Lombardi Trophy, signifying the sport of Pro Football's World Champions every year.

That's the only type of an award that Who Dats should be worried about, at the moment.

And with three games still left to play including tomorrow night's showdown at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina against the NFC South Divisional rivals the Carolina Panthers, the Black and Gold still have plenty to play for in order to achieve that goal.

The Saints always have and still now to this very moment in time, have shared one common and singular goal: which is winning another Super Bowl before Brees retires and hangs up his helmet for the final time.

That time might actually be a lot closer than any of us even realize — and it's yet just one more reason (if you "believe" in fate, destiny, or karma) that Saints fans should be happy Brees will lose out on winning the League MVP award, no matter how much that we'd all LOVE to see him finally win it.

NFL players only care about two things in this day and age: and that's making as much money as they possibly can while their bodies will allow them to; and of course winning a Super Bowl.

But THIS Saints team is narrowly-focused on the latter of those two things, because all of them to each and every man, want to help their beloved team leader and the "face of the franchise", accomplish that task.

Right now the Saints are poised to be a force to be reckoned when next month's NFL Playoffs get underway; and it will be Brees under center. who once again will be leading that charge,

So let Mahomes have the League MVP award.

And do so with the knowledge that this morning and for the remainder of this 2018 NFL season, Drew Brees and your New Orleans Saints have "much bigger fish" to fry....
