Saints' Cam Jordan One Of Many Players To Voice Displeasure For New NFL Rule

Cam Jordan didn't hold back regarding his feelings of the new banned hip-drop tackle that the NFL Competition Committee unanimously passed on Monday.

ORLANDO -- The NFL passed several new league rules at the Annual League Meetings on Monday. One of those rules will eliminate hip-drop tackles, something that Saints defensive end Cam Jordan and many players have taken to social media to voice their displeasure. Jordan said, "D-U-M-B 😂 everyone knows it…watch how you hit a QB, can’t hit anyone over the middle, nowww watch how you tackle."

Several days ago, Jordan also said regarding the then proposed rule change, "Ppl don’t know the numbers then. If this type of tackle happens but 1x or 2x a game then is it worth penalizing for. Creating more indecision in trailing defenders? & if you reference injuries let’s talk about non contact injuries vs the turf and grass surfaces we play on… but 🤷🏾‍♂️."

The Competition Committee made an amendment to Rule 12, Section 2 that eliminates a potentially dangerous tackling technique, passing it with a unanimous vote. Chairman Rich McKay of the Competition Committee said that officials will be told that they can call penalties for the swivel hip-drop tackle, but have to see three elements to it, which includes unweighting into legs. NFL Senior Vice President of Health and Safety Policy Jeff Miller said there was 230 instances of this tackle last season, and 15 players missed time due to injury from it. That's just over 6.5% of the instances.

Obviously, we know that officiating is far from perfect, and with this type of move being more 'in the moment', we'll probably see a stronger flood of these being called early on. If it looks bad, then it will get called, giving a team a free 15 yards and a fresh set of downs.
