Is Geno Smith Cool With Seahawks' QB Flirtations?

Though they just signed franchise quarterback Geno Smith to a new contract, the Seattle Seahawks are seemingly courting prospects for his job with their fifth overall pick in the NFL Draft.

In this story:

They'll visit this week with Florida's Anthony Richardson. They're taking selfies with quarterback prospects all across the country, including C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young and Will Levis. And an ESPN NFL mock draft has them taking a quarterback - Tennessee's Hendon Hooker - with the fifth overall pick.

But last time we checked, the Seattle Seahawks were so happy with Geno Smith that they signed him to a new three-year, $75 million contract that could be worth up to $105 million. Smith will turn 33 during this season, so it's savvy for the team to be at least pondering his successor.

But, in addition, the Seahawks this offseason signed backup Drew Lock.

So ... would Seattle seriously consider a quarterback with its lofty pick? And - perhaps just as important - is Smith okay with his team's seemingly blatant flirtations with up-and-coming quarterbacks?

Said coach Pete Carroll with a wink at this week's NFL owners meetings in Phoenix, "We'll see what happens."

For what it's worth, Carroll and general manager John Schneider have talked to Smith about their offseason tactics. As their newly christened franchise quarterback, he's definitely in the loop.

“I talked to Geno way back when,” Carroll said. “He knows what’s going on. I thought that was an obvious demonstration of respect, understanding that how he would look at it, and how other guys have looked at it in the past and all that. So I told him what we were doing and what the idea was, and what could happen. And he totally got it. Just like Geno has done throughout everything, he was totally on board. And if we get a guy, he’s going to take care of him and look after him. He gets it.”
