Steelers Host Sneaky Slot CB

The Pittsburgh Steelers have their eyes on a potential starting cornerback.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are getting a deeper look at Rutgers cornerback Max Melton, bringing him in for a top 30 pre-draft visit, according to KPRC2's Aaron Wilson.

Melton, a 6-foot, 190-pound cornerback, could be the missing link to the Steelers secondary. The four-year contributor at Rutgers is expected to be a slot option in the NFL, which is the final piece to the team's starting lineup for Pittsburgh. He's now set to meet with the team at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex after holding a meeting with them at the NFL Combine.

According to league sources, Melton has been on the Steelers' radar since before the NFL Combine, where he ran a 4.39 40-yard dash and put up a 40.5 inch vertical jump. He holds eight career interceptions leaving Rutgers, with 111 tackles and 22 passes defensed.

The Steelers only have two starting cornerbacks on the roster, and head coach Mike Tomlin acknowledged at the NFL Meetings that the team is in need of a slot cornerback. If Melton is expected to bump inside at the pro level, he could be viewed as an instant-starter for Pittsburgh.

Melton is viewed as a second or third-round cornerback, depending on how the board shakes out. The Steelers select 51st in the second round but then have two third-round picks in pick 84 and 98.
