Texans GM Nick Caserio: 'It's About Building a Good Team'

Houston Texans General Manager Nick Caserio addresses everything from team building to new head coach DeMeco Ryans

As the NFL combine kicks off this week, Houston Texans General Manager Nick Caserio has a busy busy offseason ahead of him leading up to the NFL Draft.

And he is anxious to turn Houston back into a winning franchise.

But according to Caserio, that starts and ends with a team-based focus.

"Philosophically, DeMeco [Ryans] and I feel it's not about one player," Caserio said. "It's not about one position. It's about building a good team, and if you have a good team, that allows you to go out there on Sunday and have some success. So, that's what our focus is going to be."

The 2023 NFL season will mark the first as a head coach for Ryans, who was hired by the Texans on Jan. 31.

He was previously an assistant coach with the San Francisco 49ers, most recently as the team's defensive coordinator.

Ryans was honored as the NFL's Assistant Coach of the Year after the 49ers' remarkable defensive performance in 2022.

"Everything that I think I heard or knew about him beforehand has come to fruition and he is who he is, so, I think that's the one thing you want to see," Caserio said. "Like, the things you experience during the interview process, then you're actually able to see him up close and personal, and it kind of matches.

"So, it's been great. The honeymoon period is probably over here a little bit. We got some work to do, but it's been a lot of fun to come into the office."

The Texans own the No. 2 and No. 12 picks in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft on April 27 in Kansas City.

Thus far, most NFL Draft pundits have suggested the Texans will select a quarterback with the second pick.

There has also been chatter of Houston trading up with the Chicago Bears, but Caserio is focused on the picks the team currently owns.

"I think we're focused on the Texans," Caserio said. "We're not focused on what other teams around us are doing. You're cognizant of that, but ultimately you have to be prepared to pick wherever you're going to pick, and be prepared to pick whatever player."

Who will those picks be?

We'll all know those answers in just a few short months.
