In this story:

A former piece of the Houston Texans' defense found a new home over the weekend.

According to a report from NFL insider Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Cleveland Browns have agreed to sign free agent defensive end Derek Barnett to a one-year, $5.5 million deal.

The move for the Browns comes after their starting defensive end, Alex Wright, would be ruled out for the 2026 season with a ruptured Achilles, thus requiring Cleveland to go out to plug up their depth on the defensive line.

Barnett, still on the free agent market less than a month away from the regular season kicking off, made sense to fill that hole, as he now makes Cleveland his next stop after spending the past three years with the Texans.

How Derek Barnett's Contract Makes the Texans Look Better

Before Barnett had found his new home in Cleveland, there had been chatter leading up to training camp linking him to a potential reunion with the Texans this season.

Houston was in need of edge depth. Barnett had been familiar with their defense for three seasons, and he was a veteran on the market still looking to find somewhere to play for 2026.

Barnett had played 39 games with the Texans through the past three seasons, had over 60 tackles and 12 sacks, finishing his 2025 campaign with five sacks and 20 games.

Texans general manager Nick Caserio even made mention during training camp that the front office had conversations with Barnett on a new deal earlier this offseason. So Houston still clearly had its eyes on Barnett as a potential signing deep into the summer.

But the Texans went in another direction for that depth on their defensive line. They went out to sign former No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney, who, by most accounts, is an upgrade over what Barnett brings to the table.

Last season with the Dallas Cowboys, Clowney was more productive as a pass rusher and in defending the run than Barnett while playing fewer games. He had over 40 tackles and eight sacks through 13 games.

And now entering the 2026 season, the Texans brought in Clowney at virtually the same price as Barnett just went for in Cleveland. And they did so two weeks after Barnett signed.

While Barnett will be netting $5.5 million on his contract for the 2026 season, Clowney will be due a maximum of $8 million with incentives, a $5.5 million base value, and $4.5 million guaranteed.

So the Texans upgraded their defensive line by adding a presence like Clowney, but did so at essentially the same price that Barnett just went for.

Bottom Line

It's a credit to not only the great business the Texans did with their acquisition of Clowney, but also to Clowney himself for being willing to take a pay cut in order to join a situation like Houston's.

Clowney noted at his opening press conference with the Texans that he could've gotten more money to join another team and likely get more snaps in the process. But his priority was to win games.

And in Houston, with the talent they have on their defense, he's got ample opportunities to do just that––albeit on a bit of a pay cut.

As a result, the Texans' defensive line will be looking deeper, stronger, and even more potent from how they finished their 2025 campaign, where this pass-rush may have already had the best one-two punch at the position with Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter.
