Titans' Ran Carthon Praises Tyjae Spears: He's Made of the Right Stuff

Part of the Q&A with Tennessee Titans general manager Ran Carthon understandably was about Titans star Derrick Henry and his free agent status. Carthon also made a point of singling out running back Tyjae Spears as the kind of player he wants on the Titans.

INDIANAPOLIS — Tennessee Titans general manager Ran Carthon couldn't hide his affection for running back Tyjae Spears during Tuesday's press conference at the NFL Scouting Combine.

During press conferences, Carthon speaks calmly and with a measured pace. However, when asked about Spears, he let out a well-timed expletive that revealed a hint of emotion.

"He's, for lack of a better way to put it, he's made of the right s--t," Carthon said with a grin that would match the word he used. "And those are the type of guys that we want to have in our program."

As a rookie last season and a backup to Titans legend Derrick Henry, Spears rushed for 453 yards and scored two touchdowns, and caught 52 passes for another 385 yards and one touchdown. Carthon believes Spears hasn't gotten anywhere near his best form.

"He's very passionate about football. He loves the game. He's a hard worker. And I think you guys that have gotten to know him know that's how he's wired and you love that about him," Carthon said. "Tyjae's one of those guys that's always in the building. I know there were a lot of concerns about his knee coming out, and that was the big question this time of year and after we drafted him. But we're talking about a guy that never missed a practice, never missed a game."

  • FATHER-SON REUNION: After six career stops over 18 years, the Tennessee Titans' Brian Callahan is an NFL head coach. His dad Bill is his offensive line coach. Speaking at the Scouting Combine, Brian said, "It's been a dream come true to be able to sit and to have a cup of coffee with my dad in the morning and talk about pass protection and technique and watch him do his job." • CARTHON, CALLAHAN LOOKING FOR PLAYMAKERS: Tennessee Titans general manager Ran Carthon and coach Brian Callahan raved about the depth in the 2024 NFL Draft class, particularly at wide receiver and offensive line.
