Post Combine Thoughts As Titans Make Moves

On Monday, the Tennessee Titans released pass rusher Bud Dupree, and have shopped Derrick Henry. Could this mean a blow-up of the roster, or is this just due diligence?

NASHVILLE - Monday was one of those reaction days for those of us in sports media. Reacting to reports of moves made by the Tennessee Titans is not unusual, but after some of the news came to light, there is a larger question to ponder.

For those who may not know it, this isn't the first time Derrick Henry has been "shopped" by the Titans. It's happened before, but mainly as a gauge for the team to determine his value on the open market.

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, the returns weren't nearly high enough for anything serious to come close to developing.

However, after yesterday's news, could the franchise that drafted Henry and has ridden him like the thoroughbred he is, be willing to part with their best offensive weapon?

If so, will they also move on from quarterback Ryan Tannehill to save more money against the cap?

At this point, it is unknown how new general manager Ran Carthon feels about the team's current roster and what direction he might be heading as he works to build his vision of this team.

We know that by deciding to cut those players already removed from the roster, he now has some working room under the salary cap to try to add quality players. He also has the potential for more money if he moves Henry and cuts Tannehill.

Doing so would signal he is blowing up the team as we've known it and looking past the coming season as the time when this franchise could be considered a contender again.

Fans might not like to think about the possibility of the 2023 season being a down one for the team, but that could well be the case if this is indeed a total rebuild, specifically on offense, where the talent level outside of Henry and Tannehill is either young or limited.

Perhaps making a significant move like this is the best option. Tear it down, secure cash, grab a few quality free agents, and head to the draft looking for some building blocks, knowing that the coming season will likely be less than stellar while aiming for 2024. After all, that would give him two free agency periods and two drafts to build the roster with his players.

One thing's for sure, I don't envy the position Carthon inherited, but then if things were in great shape, he wouldn't have had to chance to get the job.
