NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans released kicker Randy Bullock on Wednesday as part of trio of roster moves that including cutting veteran offensive tackle Taylor Lewan and wide receiver Robert Woods. Bullock will save the Titans $2 million in cap space while leaving behind $600k in dead money.

Bullock had stabilized the Titans’ kicker position after years of inconsistency and rotating name. Bullock hit 84% of his field goals with the Titans and 95% of his extra point tries. He made numerous kicks at the end of games to give the Titans wins as well. Bullock connected on 17 of his 20 field goal tries in 2022 and all 28 of his point-after-touchdown attempts.

However, the reality is Bullock is not one of the better kickers in the NFL and struggled to hit any kicks past 48 yards. Bullock hit only one 50-yarder all season(in Week 18). His struggles with power made it unlikely that the Titans would pay him nearly $3 million to be their kicker in 2023.

While it was a breath of fresh air for the Titans to have a kicker who was generally reliable under 40 yards, the rest of the NFL has seen young kickers come in and provide much more value than that. Bullock was pushed by rookie kicker Caleb Shudak last training camp and with Shudak back on a future’s contract, you can bet the Titans would rather go cheap with Shudak or even obtain a new rookie kicker in the draft process. Either with a pick or signing a kicker in undrafted free agency.

With the release of Bullock, Woods and Lewan, the Titans have cleared out nearly $29 million in salary giving them $4.2 million in salary cap space. That is still not enough to head into free agency with so expect the Titans to make additional cuts going forward. Potential names are Zach Cunningham, Bud Dupree and possibly quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
