Vrabel “Open to Adding Great Players” at Quarterback and Elsewhere

In this story:
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans leaders, Ran Carthon and Mike Vrabel, spoke on Tuesday at the 2023 NFL Combine and generated a lot of buss around quarterback Ryan Tannehill. While some took Carthon’s comments about Tannehill as a soft-commitment to the quarterback, it seems Vrabel did the opposite. Although, the reality is both Vrabel and Carthon seem to be on the same page when examining the full quotes.
Vrabel was asked about his openness to having a different quarterback in 2023 and his response was quite interesting.
Vrabel responded, “I'm as open to adding great players to our roster. Whether that is at quarterback, at running back, at defensive line, corner. I do believe that we have some needs and some holes, I’ve told you that. I’ve asked him(Carthon) to look for players that have an element of speed, of violence and versatility. That’s what I want to look for and look for offensive linemen that can protect the quarterback. Whether that’s Ryan, Malik(Willis), that’s Josh Dobbs, whoever that may end up being. Those are things that we have to do a better job at.”
It is clear that Vrabel is not certain who the quarterback will be for the 2023 Tennessee Titans and it appears that Vrabel realizes that whoever that quarterback is going to be, he will need a much improved offensive line to be able to succeed. What is most interesting might be the inclusion of Josh Dobbs in the comment. Tannehill and Malik Willis are under contract so it is not a surprise to hear Vrabel mention them, but Dobbs is currently a free agent.
This could very well be a sign that Vrabel still considers Dobbs, even as a free agent, a part of the Titans’ plans going forward. Dobbs had some good moments with the Titans at the end of the season, but certainly didn’t do anything to solidify himself as the Titans’ starter. Even with that, he is still clearly on Vrabel’s mind.
Either way, Vrabel made it obvious the team is still doing its due diligence on all parts of the roster and have yet to make any firm decisions about who will or won’t be with the team going further.
