Luongo, Mason, Kessel are Three Stars of Week
Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo, St. Louis Blues goaltender Chris Mason and Boston Bruins right wing Phil Kessel have been named the NHL's Three Stars for the week ending Apr. 12.
FIRST STAR -- Roberto Luongo, G, Canucks Luongo stopped 88 of 89 shots while compiling a 3-0-0 record with a 0.33 goals-against average, .989 save percentage and two shutouts as the Canucks (45-27-10) clinched the Northwest Division title. He began the week by recording 46 saves in a 4-1 victory over the Calgary Flames in a Northwest showdown on April 7. He made 20 saves in a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on April 9 turned aside 22 shots for his ninth shutout of the season in a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on April 11. Luongo finished the regular season with a 33-13-7 record, 2.34 GAA, .920 save pct. and nine shutouts in 54 appearances.
SECOND STAR -- Chris Mason, G, Blues Mason stopped 72 of 74 shots with a 3-0-0 record, 0.67 GAA, .973 save pct. and a shutout as the Blues (41-31-10) claimed their first playoff berth since 2003-04. Mason recorded 28 saves in a 5-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on April 7, stopped 16 shots in the playoff-clinching 3-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on April 10 and recored his sixth shutout of the season with a 28-save performance in a 1-0 win over the Colorado Avalanche on April 12. He started the Blues' last 33 games of the season and was 24-8-6 with a 2.08 GAA, .924 save pct. and five shutouts in 38 games from Jan. 19 through the end of the season. Mason led NHL goaltenders in wins and GAA over that span.
THIRD STAR -- Phil Kessel, RW, Bruins Kessel led the NHL in goals for the week (5) and added an assist as the Bruins (53-19-10) finished the season with the Eastern Conference's top record and in second place the overall standings. He scored a goal in a 3-2 loss to the Ottawa Senators on April 7, and had one in a 5-4 overtime victory over the Montreal Canadiens on April 9, finishing the week with three and an assist in a 6-2 victory over the New York Islanders on April 12. Kessel led the Bruins in goals with a career-high 36 and ranked fourth on the club in points with 36-24--60 in 70 games.
