Let the Smurf jokes begin.
Philadelphia cut the diminutive forward loose earlier this week, using a compliance buyout to create space under the salary cap. Briere is coming off a disappointing season during which he scored just six goals and 22 points, but the Canadiens obviously believe Briere can still contribute in a top-six role and chip in on the power play.
Withe Briere in the lineup, the Habs could dress as many as five forwards listed at 5-foot-10 and under. With just over $5 million left under the cap, there's a chance Montreal GM Marc Bergevin may look to address that shortcoming by adding a forward with size in free agency. Former Ranger Ryane Clowe would be an obvious choice.
