The Washington Nationals' baseball stadium will host the 2015 NHL Winter Classic, a source confirmed to ESPN.com Sunday

The Washington Capitals will take on the Chicago Blackhawks on New Years Day 2015, in what has become a popular annual tradition for the NHL. The 2014 Winter Classic featured a contest at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich., between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings that more than 105,000 fans purchased tickets for and which nearly set an attendance record at the enormous stadium.

Representatives for the Nationals and Capitals did not comment on the matter, but the deal is expected to be announced "very soon," according to theWashington Post, whichreported the story late Saturday night

The NHL was looking at other venues to host the game as well, according to ESPN, including FedEx Field, the home of the Washington Redskins, as well as RFK Stadium.

Three other major league baseball stadiums have held three of the six Winter Classics.

The Blackhawks will be playing their second major outdoor game in as many seasons. The team hosted an outdoor contest at Soldier Field in March as part of a series of NHL games played outside.
