Edmonton Oilers defenseman Keith Aulie has been suspended for two games after he laid an illegal check on Calgary Flames center Matt Stajan in the first period of Wednesday’s Oilers-Flames game, the NHL announced Thursday

Aulie, who received a five-minute major and a game misconduct for the check, hit Stajan in the head with his elbow as Stajan was trying to receive a pass in the first period of what became a 4-3 overtime Flames win.

Stajan later returned to the game.

Aulie, in his first season in Edmonton, has played in just 13 games this season and has not recorded a point. He has 49 penalty minutes for the Oilers.
