The San Jose Sharks will hire former New Jersey Devils coach Peter DeBoer, ESPN's Pierre LeBrun reports

The Sharks are seeking to replace Todd McLellan, who mutually agreed to part ways with the franchise after San Jose finished this season in 12th place in the Western Conference. The Edmonton Oilershired McLellan to be their new coach last week.

DeBoer, who turns 47 next month, was fired by the Devils 36 games into this season, his fourth with the team. The Devils' only playoff appearance under DeBoer was in the 2011–12 season, when they won the Eastern Conference and lost to the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup final.

Prior to joining the Devils, DeBoer spent three seasons as the head coach of the Florida Panthers. In his first year, he led the team to what was then its second-best regular-season record but failed to make the playoffs.

An official announcement is expected by the end of the week, LeBrun reports.
