Patrick Kane to Sign With Red Wings, per Report

Patrick Kane is nearing a return to professional hockey and intends to sign with the Red Wings, according to a report from ESPN’s Emily Kaplan on Tuesday morning.

The 35-year-old Kane has been recovering from hip resurfacing surgery that took place in early June. Following a grueling rehab process, Kane has chosen the Red Wings after being impressed with coach Derek Lalonde’s “X’s and O’s hockey acumen and vision for Detroit,” per Kaplan.

Kane reportedly picked the Red Wings over interest from the Rangers, Panthers, Sabres and Maple Leafs, according to Chris Johnston of The Athletic.

Kane accumulated 57 points in 73 games for the Rangers and Blackhawks last season, marking the least productive year of his NHL career. The former league MVP is looking to prove that he’s healthy and can still contribute at a high level following his serious hip surgery.

Kane is one of the greatest U.S. hockey players ever. With 1,237 career points, he ranks second all-time in scoring among Americans to former Stars great Mike Modano.
