Cristiano Ronaldo statue vandalized with Lionel Messi’s name, number

Tuesday January 12th, 2016
A Cristiano Ronaldo statue in Madeira, Portugal has been vandalized with Lionel Messi’s name and number.
AS tweeted an image of the life-sized statue Tuesday clearly showing “Messi 10” in red paint written on the back of the statue, which stands in Ronaldo’s hometown.
A clean-up operation is reportedly already underway, and the vandalism has been widely denounced already. The statue was erected in 2014 as a gift from Madeira’s regional government, and bears the inscription “best player in the world.”
On Monday, Messi, the Barcelona star, beat out Ronaldo for the prestigious Ballon d’Or trophy. In addition to playing on opposite sides of soccer’s fiercest rivalry, the two players have battled year after year for the title of best in the world. And so, it appears a Messi fan may have had a bone to pick with the statue itself.
