Mario Gomez's goal was all a dominant Germany needed to beat Northern Ireland and win its Euro 2016 group.
Reigning World Cup champion Germany won Group C at Euro 2016 after a 1-0 victory over Northern Ireland on Tuesday.
Germany dominated possession and had numerous chances denied by heroic Northern Ireland goalkeeper Michael McGovern and two chances put off the post by Thomas Muller. Mario Gomez delivered the breakthrough in the 29th minute with his 29th international goal. It came off a set-up by Muller and gave Germany the three points and goal tally it needed to outlast Poland. Both teams finished with seven points, but Germany advanced on goal difference.
Northern Ireland still has a chance to go through as a top-four third-place finisher, with its three points after a 2-0 win over Ukraine potentially enough to send it through. Its goal-differential of 0 could come into play.
