New York Red Bulls secure first win of season; Thierry Henry scores his second goal

Last season's MLS Supporters' Shield winners finally have their first win of the 2014 campaign.

It took seven games, but the New York Red Bulls are into the win column at long last after holding on for Wednesday's 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union at Red Bull Arena.

Thierry Henry scored the goal that broke a scoreless deadlock and got the Red Bulls on their way, clinically finishing after a clean build-up. Costa Rican international defender Roy Miller delivered the decisive pass, cutting back at a tight angle after completing a run into the box off a feed from Eric Alexander. Henry one-timed it with precision from close range in the 57th minute for his second goal of the season. 

Lloyd Sam doubled the lead 10 minutes later, beating teammate Tim Cahill to Alexander's chipped cross to the center of the box, from where he headed it home.

Philadelphia pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 80th minute through former Red Bull Sebastien Le Toux. The PK was granted after center back Ibrahim Sekagya slid to the ground and blocked U.S. World Cup hopeful Maurice Edu's attempt inside the box with his hand, leaving the Red Bulls shorthanded for the final 10-plus minutes.

They prevailed, though, and while only one unbeaten team remains in MLS -- 2-0-4 Real Salt Lake -- a staggering four teams remain winless after the Red Bulls escaped the dubious grouping. Portland, last season's Western Conference regular season champ, is surprisingly among the four with an 0-2-4 mark. The others are Chicago (0-1-5), Montreal (0-3-3) and San Jose (0-2-2).
