Freddy Adu heads to Norway to train with Bob Bradley's Stabaek

Freddy Adu's last act as a member of the senior U.S. men's national team was a stout showing in the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup final, shining individually as the U.S. lost to Mexico 4-2 at the Rose Bowl in what was Bob Bradley's last match in charge as manager. May the two be set for a reunion?

SI's Grant Wahl reports that Adu, out of contract since ending a stint with Brazilian club Bahia over the winter, arrived in Norway on Saturday to train with Bradley's Stabaek. Where it goes from there remains to be seen.

The last six-plus months have been fruitless for Adu, who trained with England second-tier club Blackpool, and even played in a few reserve contests, but did not land a contract. He hardly played at Bahia, making seven appearances and one start after heading to the club in a swap that brought former World Cup winner Kleberson to the Philadelphia Union.

Adu wound up at the Union after his successful Gold Cup showing, and he was also a big part of the U.S. Under-23 side that failed to qualify for the 2012 Olympics in London. Prior to his Gold Cup call-up, Adu had gone the unconventional route to play in Turkey's second division, and his output for Caykur Rizespor was strong enough for Bradley to give him a U.S. lifeline for the 2011 regional championship.

Perhaps linking back up with Bradley is the best option for Adu, who turned 25 earlier this month. Bradley has turned to the American market for players in his first season at the helm with Stabaek, signing midfielder Michael Stephens from the LA Galaxy. He also had former Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Matt Pickens on trial before the veteran signed with the NASL's Tampa Bay Rowdies. Stabaek currently sits in 10th place in Norway's top flight with a 6-7-0 record.
