Against Ghana, Clint Dempsey did it early. Against Portugal the USA captain left his heroics for late.

Drawn At The Death: Five Thoughts on the USA's 2-2 draw with Portugal

Playing with a broken nose suffered in the USA's Group G opener against Ghana, Dempsey scored an 81st-minute go-ahead goal for the USA against Portugal, momentarily putting the Americans ahead and on course for the knockout stage. Of course, Silvestre Varela's 95th-minute header prevented that from happening, but at the time, it was another landmark moment in a World Cup full of them.

20-year-old DeAndre Yedlin, in his World Cup debut off the bench, carried deep down the right channel before firing in a cross. It was deflected out to Michael Bradley, who fed Graham Zusi, the provider on John Brooks' winner against Ghana. Again, Zusi made the right play, picking out an onside Dempsey in the center of the box. After peering back to see his defender and make sure he was onside, Dempsey redirected the cross with his hip before being mobbed by his teammates.
