France: Marseille tops Evian, Nice picks up first points of the season

PARIS (AP) -- Marseille eased to a 2-0 win at home to Evian on Saturday as it continued its perfect start in the French league.

Last year's runner-up took the lead in the 16th minute, when Rod Fanni lifted the ball over the defense to Andre-Pierre Gignac, who feinted past Jonathan Mensah and rifled a shot into the back of the net from the edge of the penalty area.

Marseille had several chances to double its advantage and eventually did so in the 66th minute. Dimitri Payet, who was signed from Ligue 1 rival Lille in the offseason, controlled Mathieu Valbuena's pass and did well to round Mensah before drilling the ball into the bottom left corner for his third goal in two matches.

"It's a dream start for me and for the team," Payet said. "We have six points out of six, we're very happy tonight. We're managing to find each other's rhythm, work well together. We're scoring goals, which is important to win matches.

"It was my first home match here and being substituted to an ovation was something special for me. I'm going to continue working hard so it can happen again."

Newly-promoted Guingamp is still without a point after losing 1-0 at Saint-Etienne, following a 3-1 defeat at home to Marseille last week and.

Fabien Lemoine played a swift one-two with Brandao on the edge of the area before firing into the top left corner to score the only goal of the game in the 52nd minute.

Nice was also reeling from a hefty 4-0 defeat at Lyon last week, but it picked up its first points of the new campaign with a 2-1 victory over Rennes. The match was played behind closed doors due to incidents in Nice's match against Lyon in May.

Dario Cvitanich gave Nice a deserved lead in the 20th minute but the home side failed to finish off its opportunities and Rennes leveled with its first chance of the game in first-half stoppage time. New loan signing Nelson Oliveira was left completely unmarked to control Yassine Jebbour's cross and volley home a powerful effort.

Jeremy Pied restored Nice's advantage five minutes after the interval. Rennes midfielder Vincent Pajot was sent off in the final minute following a foul on Valentin Eysseric.

Toulouse drew 1-1 at home to 10-man Bordeaux as both sides collected their first point this season.

Toulouse thought it had taken the lead in the 12th minute. Jean-Daniel Akpa-Akpro's header seemed to be heading into the goal but Eden Ben Basat made sure and was ruled offside.

Bordeaux was forced to play most of the match with 10 men after Marc Planus was sent off following a foul on Ben Basat which was adjudged to have prevented a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Despite its numerical disadvantage Bordeaux took the lead two minutes from halftime thanks to Cheick Diabate but Ben Basat leveled almost immediately.

Reims, which narrowly avoided relegation last season, beat Lille 2-1 with a goal in either half from new Danish recruit Mads Albaek and Christopher Glombard. Prince Oniangue also hit the crossbar.

Marko Basa reduced the deficit two minutes from time but it was too little too late.

Elsewhere, Bastia won 2-0 at home to Valenciennes with second-half goals from new recruits Gianni Bruno and Adam Ba.
