Sporting KC visits White House, meets Obama, takes group selfie

A full 298 days since lifting the MLS Cup trophy, Sporting Kansas City got the presidential treatment in Washington D.C.

The reigning champions made a trip to the White House in advance of Friday's crucial game at D.C. United, where President Barack Obama greeted the team, congratulated them on their success and perhaps most importantly, complimented defender Aurelien Collin's fashion sense.

"I'm gonna look like him after I get out of office," Obama said of the defender who has recently launched his own clothing line. "He looks pretty sharp."

In turn, Sporting KC manager Peter Vermes presented Obama with a medal and framed jersey with "Obama" and the number 44 on the back.

"That's a beautiful shirt, but I'll have to break the glass to wear it," Obama quipped.

Sporting forward and noted selfie master Dom Dwyer went in with the goal of getting a frame with the President, but it appears for now he had to settle for one with his entire team:

The visit is the latest in what has been a pretty good trio of days for Kansas City sports fans, with the Chiefs' dominating win over the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football, and Tuesday's epic, come-from-behind, walk-off win by the Royals over the Oakland A's in the AL Wild Card game.

Sporting's success, though, came far before any of that.

"Clearly something is going on in Kansas City," Obama said "But apparently these guys are the ones that got it all rolling."
