Red Bulls sign Bradley Wright-Phillips as designated player
The New York Red Bulls signed forward Bradley Wright-Phillips as a designated player ahead of the 2015 season, the club announced Wednesday.
The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
In his first full season with the Red Bulls, Wright-Phillips earned the Golden Boot by leading Major League Soccer with 27 goals, tying a league record. He was also named to the MLS Best XI team and the team’s Most Valuable Player.

"Following his outstanding performances in 2014, which produced 31 goals in all competitions, the club has decided to make Bradley Wright-Phillips a MLS Designated Player," New York Red Bulls Sporting Director Andy Roxburgh said. “Bradley is not only a prolific goal scorer, he is an excellent professional and a great team player who will be a big asset to the club in the coming seasons."
In four appearances in the 2014 postseason, Wright-Phillips scored four goals, helping New York reach the Eastern Conference Finals against the New England Revolution. He was suspended for the second leg of the Conference Finals, and the Red Bulls ended up losing 4–3 on aggregate.
Wright-Phillips and midfielder Tim Cahill will be the club's designated players next season. Former designated player Thierry Henry will not return after more than four seasons with the team.
