Forward Radamel Falcao will not be kept on at Manchester United and will return to Monaco from his season-long loan, the club announced Sunday.

Manager Louis Van Gaal informed Falcao of his decision prior to United's season finale against Hull City on Sunday, according to The Telegraph. The Colombian striker, 29, was left out of the team for that match.

Manchester United held an option for a permanent move to keep Falcao, with a transfer fee of £43.2m agreed upon as part of his loan deal. Falcao has scored just four times in 26 appearances for United, after arriving on the last day of last year's summer transfer window. Falcao missed last summer's World Cup with a knee injury and struggled to regain his form.

Falcao will return to AS Monaco in the French Ligue 1, at least for the short-term, until his team situation is settled for next season.
