AZ Alkmaar agrees to send USA's Aron Johannsson to Werder Bremen
U.S. men's national team forward Aron Johannsson is headed to the Bundesliga.
AZ Alkmaar announced that it has agreed on a transfer with German club Werder Bremen for Johannsson, who has spent the last three seasons in the Dutch Eredivisie with AZ. Johannsson, 24, scored 38 goals in all competitions in that time with AZ. Werder Bremen announced Wednesday that Johannsson is signed on a four-year deal.
"It's obviously nice to make the next step and to go to Bundesliga, it's one of the best leagues in the world. In that perspective it's very nice. It's also a little bit mixed feelings, a little bit sad to leave AZ," Johannsson told AZ's official website.
"Once [Werder Bremen] came and were interested, it was a pretty easy choice for me to decide to do it, because obviously I want to play for a better team in a better league and Bundesliga is one of the best leagues in the world. So it's a step in the right direction for me and hopefully it'll go good."
Werder Bremen finished 10th in the Bundesliga last season, scoring 50 goals in 34 matches. Johannsson is coming off a Gold Cup with the USA in which he scored one goal, chipping the goalkeeper in a 6-0 rout of Cuba.
