The United States topped Iceland 3–2 on Sunday thanks to a late goal from center back Steve Birnbaum.

In the 90th minute, Birnbaum headed a free kick from Michael Bradley into the back of the net to put the USMNT ahead for good after the Americans battled back from a pair of one-goal deficits. It was Birnbaum's first career international goal, and it followed an assist he had to Michael Orozco for an equalizer in the 59th minute.

Jerome Kiesewetter, making his senior national team debut after starring for the Under-23s in Olympic qualifying, set up the game-winning play by drawing a foul. Bradley delivered his service from the right into center of the box, where Birnbaum, who plays for D.C. United, leaped to head home the goal.

Jozy Altidore also scored for the U.S., pulling within two of Eric Wynalda for third on the USA's all-time scoring list with his 32nd career international goal. It also came off a feed from Bradley, his Toronto FC teammate.
