Seattle Sounders sign Herculez Gomez after training stint
First he played for them. Then he tormented them. Now he's back.
Former U.S. men's national team forward Herculez Gomez has signed with the Seattle Sounders following a trial, the MLS club announced Thursday, adding the experienced striker to the roster as the club looks to improve following an 0-3-0 start to the 2016 season.
Gomez played for the NASL's Sounders on loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2003, and he became a nemesis to the MLS Sounders in CONCACAF Champions League play while he was with Liga MX side Santos Laguna, scoring four goals against Seattle in 2012 and 2013. After being waived by Toronto FC ahead of the current campaign, he finds himself back in the Pacific Northwest for a club that has MLS Cup aspirations but no points through three matches.
“Herculez is a veteran player who has played in some big games,” Sounders manager Sigi Schmid said in a statement. “I look forward to his team play, hard-working attitude and his goal scoring as an addition to our team.”
Gomez, 33, is eligible to play for the club in its next match, against the Montreal Impact on April 2.
