In his first-person essay as told to SI’s Grant Wahl, Argentina and Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi describes a typical day in his life as a father of two.
Away from the field, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is a family man who has two sons under the age of five–three-year-old Thiago and eight-month-old Matteo–with whom he and his longtime partner Antonella Roccuzzo spend time like any ordinary parents would.
“A typical day involves taking Thiago to school, going to training, hanging out at home drinking maté and spending time with Anto and the kids at the park or somewhere,” Messi says. “It’s a normal, calm life, the kind of life we have always wanted.”

In the piece, the 28-year-old calls the births of his sons “life changing,” adding that he’s “ecstatic about the family we have been able to create.”
Messi will lead Argentina in the Copa America Centenario in the United States beginning in June.
