Will Grigg gets massive reception from fans in Northern Ireland
Will Grigg never got the opportunity to confirm or deny whether he was actually on fire at Euro 2016, as he went unused during Northern Ireland's four matches in France, but that didn't stop him from receiving a hero's welcome in Belfast.
The Wigan Athletic striker, who is the inspiration for a viral fan chant, was at the center of Northern Ireland's reception for a reported 10,000 fans after its Euro 2016 ouster. Northern Ireland went through as a top-four third-place finisher, eventually falling to Wales in the round of 16.
Grigg's name was chanted in the stands throughout games, even though he never played. Variations on the chant were adapted for other players. It was the source of some pretty hilarious pranks. Even France great Eric Cantona gave his own, shall we say, unique rendition of the song.
Grigg was expectedly disappointed to not play in the Euros, saying: "The song is one thing, but to come to a tournament like this and not play, as a professional footballer, is massively disappointing," according to the BBC.
