Middlesbrough has been discussing signing U.S. goalkeeper Brad Guzan on a free transfer from Aston Villa, ESPN FC reports.

Guzan is entering the final year of his contract with Aston Villa, where he has played since 2008. The club is reportedly inclined to grant his transfer as it tries to reduce expenses by off-loading contracts after its relegation last season.

Guzan, 31, lost his starting job to Mark Bunn in the final weeks of last season. The club proceeded to sign Pierluigi Gollini, who is expected to start at goalkeeper for the coming season, adding to Guzan’s displacement.

Aston Villa was relegated after finishing last in the Premier League during the 2015–16 season, while Middlesbrough earned promotion to the Premier League from the Championship.
