Barcelona FC invites Chapecoense to play friendly.

Barcelona extended an invitation to host a friendly match against the Brazilian soccer club Chapecoense after it was involved in a tragic plane crash last week, the club announced.

The team said they want to "pay homage to the 71 people who died in the accident as well as their families," and sent a formal invitation to the team on Thursday.

Chapecoense was heading to the final of Copa Sudamericana when its flight went crashed in Colombia, killing all but six people on the flight.

Three Chapecoense players survived the crash.

Barcelona also said along with an invitation to the Joan Gamper Trophy, a friendly match, the team said they wanted to "collaborate on the institutional and sporting reconstruction of the Club, and help to recover the competitive level that it had."

The match would be played in August.
