Sam Allardyce has praised Tottenham's bold decision not to sign any players during the last two transfer windows.

The club's last signing was Lucas Moura, who arrived from Paris Saint-Germain in January 2018. Their lack of transfer activity has been the subject of criticism from many fans and pundits, with many suggesting that the Tottenham players are suffering from fatigue as a result of their lack of rotation.

Speaking on Sky Sports' coverage of Deadline Day, Allardyce insisted Tottenham's lack of activity should be praised. He said: "If you are spending big to sign someone as good as Harry Kane, you are talking £80 million, £90 million or £100 million.

"If you don't need a player don't sign one. Don't sign one for the sake of it. It's pretty brave for Daniel Levy and Mauricio Pochettino to stand up for that.

"Who knows where they might finish. Tottenham are having a fantastic season."

Allardyce then went on to discuss Newcastle United's signing of Paraguayan midfielder Miguel Almiron from Atlanta United. The 24-year-old joined the club for a fee of £20m, becoming Newcastle's record signing ahead of the £16m fee Real Madrid paid to sign Michael Owen in 2005.

The former Toon boss said: “I think maybe we’ve seen [owner Mike Ashley] saying openly he wants to sell the club.

“Buying these players for Rafa [Benitez] saves Newcastle in the Premier League and finally someone might come along and give him the money he needs to sell the club. Everybody wins.”

As well as Almiron, Newcastle completed the loan signing of Monaco defender Antonio Barreca, as they seek to continue their rise away from the relegation zone.

The shock 2-1 victory over Manchester City on Tuesday leaves Newcastle 14th in the Premier League, and Benitez's side currently boast a five-point advantage over Cardiff City in 18th. They will face Tottenham on Saturday, and it remains to be seen whether Benitez will opt to hand debuts to either of Almiron or Barreca.
