Katie McCabe Nets Olimpico for Ireland’s First Women’s World Cup Goal vs. Canada

Any time a nation scores its first-ever goal at a major tournament, there’s reason to celebrate. But on Wednesday against Canada, Katie McCabe made sure Ireland went into the Women’s World Cup history books in style.

After former Stanford University forward Kyra Carusa’s shot was sent out of play in the fourth minute, McCabe stepped to the corner and sent a cross into the box with her left foot. 

The Irish captain’s inswinging corner soared over the defense and Canada goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan’s flailing arm, glancing off the post and into the net for the goal.

The Olimpico—a goal scored directly from a corner kick attempt—gave Ireland its first-ever goal at the Women’s World Cup along with a shocking lead over the reigning Olympic gold medalists. 

Canada would soon come roaring back, scoring the equalizer in first-half stoppage time thanks to an Ireland own goal after Megan Connolly turned a Canada pass into her own net. Manchester United star Adriana Leon would then give Canada the lead in the 53rd minute. 

Canada would then hold on to the lead to secure a 2–1 win, effectively eliminating Ireland from the tournament.
